Today, I'm starting off visiting Burn2, which is Second Life's version of Burning Man. Burning Man is a real event held every year in Nevada.
"Once a year, tens of thousands of participants gather in Nevada's Black Rock Desert to create Black Rock City, dedicated to community, art, self-expression, and self-reliance. They depart one week later, having left no trace whatsoever."
In Second Life, Burn was first held in 2003. It's hard to explain what it's all about. Burn is "people building art, camps and communities and celebrate being who they really are." So, you see some unique, bizarre, original, & fascinating things there...because that's who we all really are!
LANDING AT BURN2
The SL Events guide is full of scheduled events and features for the week. Ideally, just land and explore. There are 4 sims built for the event.
AEONIA ARTIST GROUP PRESENTATION
From the informational note:
"Life is a path you follow. Along this path you will arrive at many waypoints. At each of these crossings questions arise. Should i turn left? Should I buy this car? Should I learn Chinese? And decisions are brought upon us. Which school will i go to? Should I go work overseas? Will you marry me?
Each waypoint, each intersection represents a choice, but it also asks for a decision. And even if the the answers seems to be a minor one – life will never be the same afterwards. Each step to cross the respective intersection is a passage into something new. Each decision taken, each answer given, is a rite of passage. It cannot be avoided – for even if we decide not to give the answer to one of life’s questions – life will not be the same. Change will be forced upon us.The installation "In-Decision" by Aeonia Artist Group is all about these waypoints – and the questions that arise, if the viewer arrives at one. Choose your path and see for yourself, where life takes you."
MAYA PARIS
"Day of the Dead Mermaids, sit on us and watch us glow."
THE SACRIFICE
The Sacrifice by Claudia222 Jewell
"Facing death to prove braveness and to gain enlightenment are Rites of Passage."
CAMPGROUND AT BURN
Campgrounds are important in the real-world Burning Man. Themed camps are the interactive core of Burning Man and participants set them up with enthusiasm and creativity. Here is a large community campground at SL's version of the event.
PLACE OF MANY COLORS!
Burn2 has a live stream with video, hosts DJ's and live performers, and more. The event is running through this weekend.
RAVE DOME 2011
"Grab some free Laser Sticks, crank up the tuneage and get your dance on by clicking the center of the laser."
Build by - Kikiri Tuqiri
VISIT THE RAVE DOME
"TO THE STARS" BY NISH MIP
"Human kinds passage to the stars from the sparks of invention to the journey across the universe and beyond."
DANCE
Another feature from Kikiri Tuqiri.
"The party is in the future! Pass through to the other side, delve into the bowels then dance on top and or ride the eye."
It's a wild and weird experience even virtually. Be prepared for some lag, due to heavy use of glow and scripts, as well as the crowds. So I recommend travelling light. The real world event sounds like something I would die to attend, I'll have to look into that.
