Role play is extremely popular in Second Life. There's a tremendous amount of choice when it comes to themes and places within each theme. I enjoy it quite some & will keep throwing in some new posts with various types and examples of the role play available. Today I visited some of the dark urban role play sims.
DEAD END
ENTRY ZONE
"Just like a graphic novel, the characters in Dead End City live a life of crime, despair, and hope. When you arrive, pick a role and start your own urban-noir story in this dark metropolis. -SL Destination Guide"
BLACK SKIES
FORBIDDING
View in the residential area of Dead End. You can actually rent or buy land in this RP group of sims. From the website: "Alterscape™ offers land and housing in some of the most immersive, artistic, and realistically designed regions in Second Life®. Unlike mainland, our portfolio of estates is protected with a covenant ensuring residents live on land that will always have a total and inclusive feel to it. From content creators to the casual resident, our estates foster thriving communities and their vivid creativity since 2006."
HOSPITAL IN DEAD END
I forgot to check, but wonder, did they actually name the hospital Dead End Hospital? Not very reassuring! Hope your health insurance and life insurance is paid up or you could be in trouble here!
I NEED A DOCTOR!
The waiting/exam rooms are wonderfully filthy. I've done urban RP as a medical tech & it's loads of fun. This looks like it would be a marvelous place to do it.

CITY VIEW
I love the lit windows in the skyscrapers. The dark, eerie skies add a lot of character to this place. Apparently, they are rebuilding it soon according to the website. Hopefully, they'll keep this ambience.
THE CRACK DEN
URBAN BUILDING
The Crack Den is one of the most popular urban role play sims. The website explains its purpose and existence on the SL grid:
"Crack Den (CD) is an online 3-D environment in the virtual world of Second Life. Since 2006, its community has grown to over 5,000 residents and sprawls over six urban-themed sims. Built for role-play, the Den is most known for its emphasis on realism and immersion. It also offers residential and commercial land, urban shopping, and an off -grid community platform for players to showcase their stories and art."

SKYLINE
The park (lower front) was very unkempt and yet somehow inviting.
SHOPS IN THE DOWNTOWN
During my visits to the RP sims today, you can't see it but I'm wearing a titler that says Observer. This is very important if you're visiting just to check things out & don't want to participate in the role play just yet. It's very bad manners to be "out of character" and ruin other peoples' immersion in the role play environment.
ROLE PLAYERS DOWNTOWN
DOWNTOWN STRUCTURE
This structure caught my eye. Very beautifully built.
LOOKS LIKE HOME TO ME
I've visited Dead End some time ago & they really pumped it up since then. Now, if I was to participate (which I very well might!) this would be my home. I'm a perpetual hobo!
POLICE BRUTALITY
The police in this city seem a little corrupt to me...ya think?? The Dead End website states the cops now have their own official uniform!
"The men and women of the Dead End Police Department now officially have a COMPLETE uniform, from boots to the driver's cap. Designed by [4mc], the uniform offers a low ARC while completely sculpted. It also comes to us at a 50% discount which is why the uniform is limited to those who are in the DEPD / Emergency Services group only.-Dead End"
CITY WHARF
A small derelict fishing shack overlooks a land that has been obviously neglected...abused...and worse.
RESIDENTIAL DISTRICT
This is the urban residential area (one of them) where you can rent properties. There's also a rural area in which small plots of land can be purchased. The build itself is flawless; very well done.

PERDITION
DOWNTOWN VIEW
From the SL Website:
"City of Perdition is a realistic, modern-day metropolis where criminals flourish in every tier of society — from the wealthy social elite of uptown's Ivory Towers, to the grungy street thugs of the dirty, forsaken ghettos." - SL Destination Guide
UNPLEASANT ALLEY
"Criminal elements thrive here, as do the well-meaning and hard working middle classes. The Police in Perdition are largely hard working men and women trying to make a difference as opposed to trying to score big off the criminals they pursue or take advantage of the citizens they took an oath to protect." - From the City of Perdition website
PROVIDENCE HOSPITAL
"Providence Memorial Hospital was established June 13th, 1932. Perdition's Original hospital was establish during the Civil War, when the towns name was still Providence. Providence Memorial Hospital has always been a participant in all new medical sciences, and continues to this day, to pump out some of the best patient care in the state of Massachusetts."-Perdition website
CITY STREETS
I was particularly impressed with the level of detail provided to the roles & backstory of Perdition. For instance, in describing the roles of the law enforcement group:

"Your character doesn't always have to be on the path of straight and good. There's plenty of room for corruption within both the police department and the court system. Just be prepared to face the music should you be caught with your hand in the cookie jar." - Perdition website

MIDIAN CITY
MAIN STREET
Midian is one of the pioneers in dark urban role play.
From the SL Website:
"Visit Midian City, where you'll encounter your darkest nightmare and a senseless beating thrown in for good measure. Engage in cat-and-mouse combat in this dark, futuristic urban dystopia." -SL Destination Guide
THE SNAKE PIT
A place of ill repute in which many suspicious activities have occurred over the years....not for the faint of heart!
URBAN BUILDING
The lovely buildings & textures make Midian a standout. Much of the city has a Japanese flavor as well.
THE FUNHOUSE
I've heard the funhouse isn't maybe...so much fun...I had this friend, well, never mind. You don't want to know.
